volunteering

last monday was my final meeting for a mentor program that i've been volunteering at through Galore-PHWA (Professional Hmong Women Association). i started volunteering back in october 2010--i can't believe that much time has passed! hmong professional women were paired with hmong high school girls and we taught them how to research colleges, write a resume, figure out their goals in life...it was a really great experience and my mentee and i got along really well! she was really artistic, completely opposite from me: who sadly can't even draw a good stick figure. :p

i really believe in the mission of this program and probably will volunteer again next fall. since i was young i have always had mentors who shaped my life. my 5th grade teacher, mr. sibley. my political science teacher in junior high, ms. lee. my mentor in law school who helped me obtain my current job! i'm so excited bc i just found a new mentor at work as well!!! it's my turn to give back to the community and i hope i can help other people as much as my mentors have helped me in the past. it's especially important to me that women, minority women, are influencing younger girls in a world where often women are second-class citizens compared to men!

now that i'm done with school, i have more free time to volunteer in the community and join activities that i've been meaning to since law school! this summer i will be volunteering every monday at people serving people. it's an emergency shelter for homeless people. i will be volunteering with kids doing a reading program. i'm not quite sure what it entails exactly, hehe, but im excited. here's a link to their website and a video that KARE11 did on their org (which is how i found out about them)!

people serving people

i'll also be volunteering this summer at our church's kids ministry program! their greatest need right now are room assistants for the classes, so that's most likely what i'll be doing. so excited to give back to the community and to the church! i've always believed strongly in service. it started in grade school when i volunteered as a "peer mediator" where we would help resolve conflicts and fights between kids. hehe.

well, my latest obsession has been the chanel and marc jacobs quilted purses. of course i would never have enough money to buy one, but a look-alike would be great!

i think it looks really classy. maybe one day i'll find a nice look-alike quilted purse that doesnt seem like its trying too hard to be one of the above. :) hehe.

well, gotta go!

God bless,
