Don Miller wrote Blue Like Jazz back in 2003 and eventually it became a hit through word-of-mouth, blogs, and personaly testimonies. Personally, I've never read anything like it and I read a lot!I don't read novels or biographies but I read the Bible, blogs, music reviews, Magic articles, guitar related articles, comics, text books, I can even read sheet music, and lots of numbers on my computer screen at work (I'm an accountant). The point is I read a lot and Blue Like Jazz is one of my all time favorite reads. Heck... I kind of want to start reading it again right now!
For the past couple of years Don's been trying to make this book into a screenplay and eventually into a movie. But on his blog on 9/16/10, all pre-production stopped! He explains in his blog @ http://donmilleris.com/2010/09/16/blue-like-jazz-the-movie-the-update/.
Hollywood cares only about one thing... MONIES, MONIES, MONIES! If the movie will make money, they will make it.
Hence the reason why we have movies like:
The animated family movie: Surf's Up
The romantic comedy/musical: From Justin to Kelly
and those horrible comedic paradies like: Epic MovieWhy does Hollywood make such horrible movies! Because they make money! No studio is going to invest money into a movie that isn't going to make money. But check this out!
On Don Miller's Blog on 9/29/10. Momentum was building after the movie has been officially declared dead. Literally over night, through various social media sources like twitter and facebook, they raised over 10% of their needed funds. See here: http://donmilleris.com/2010/09/29/blue-like-jazz-gets-saved/
Then on 10/7/10, the initial $125,000 goal was reached. The movie will start shooting this coming Monday. See here: http://donmilleris.com/2010/10/07/you-did-it/
I just check again today and guess what! Blue Like Jazz has just become the largest crowd-sourced movie ever! Investors said "No one wants to see that movie!" But we proved them wrong! Granted it's a Christian movie, don't expect CGI or Forest Gump here. But at the same time, don't expect the poor quality from movies like The Left Behind series or Facing the Giants either. Expect something in between. Donald Miller even pushed the boundaries of this Christian movie to a rating of PG-13 because he wanted it to seem more realistic.
There's still time to donate and help out if you want. They officially start production this Monday and you'll have till then to donate if you still want. Here's the website: www.savebluelikejazz.com.
ALSO! Donald Miller will be coming to MN! He's going to be on the Love Tells The Story Tour with Derek Webb, Sandra McCracken and the Robbie Seay Band. They'll be at Church of the Open Door (Maple Grove) on Sunday, Nov. 14th and it starts 6pm!
Have a great weekend everyone!
