FNM @ Outpost 2000 & Beyond

Okay, I will make this quick! So I went to FNM @ Outpost again. This time I was by myself. Out of 18 people I took 4th place and received only 1 pack as my prize. I did win my second Isochron Scepter though! Not too bad!

In the first match I played against another Cruel Control deck. He didn't have any good lands and only played with those tap land from Shards of Alara but he did have everything else. I was able to beat him easily in the first game because of my 2 Treetop Villages. In the second game I had Fullminator Mages which did damage to him and destroyed some of his key lands.

1-0

In the second match, I played against a Kithkin deck fully loaded with Mutavaults and Mirrorweaves. I lost the first game due to a mulligan and bad draws. He was also able to get out 2 Wizened Cenns. I won the 2nd game. But he won the third game. I had bad draws and should of mulliganed. In my opinion, I think Kithkin is the best deck in Standard right now. It has answers for everything. More on this later.

1-1

In the third match, I played against a R/B Elemental deck. He consistently dropped a Flamekin Harbinger (the only Harbinger, besides the Treefolk one, that's worth playing), a Smokebraider, a Ashenmoor Gouger, and a Fist of the Demigo by the second round consistently. Giving him a 6/6 First Strike, Wither creature attacking on turn three. Luckily I had Bant Charm. I would eventually Wrath or Firespout and he would run out of steam. I did lose the first match but was able to make a comeback and continue to make my run for the prize.

2-1

In my final match, I played against a Black Control deck. He used Graveborn Muse for card advantage and both Consume Spirit and Corrupt as his kill condition. Again I lost my first game but was able to regroup and make a come back to finish the night at 3-1. In the first game I lost to Corrupt that hit for 9 life. In the 2nd and 3rd games I was able to Mind Shatter him 3 times and I sideboarded in 3 Negates.

3-1

I had a good time overall. I was really nervous because I didn't get to play test much this week. And I thew my sideboard in really quick.

Oh! I played Cruel Control again and just modified it a little bit. This week I played with 4 Fullminator Mages and 2 Arbiters of Knolridge in my sideboard. My deck had 2 Nucklavees and 2 Mind Shatters. My deck had only 6 creatures and 27 lands. I play with so many lands and 2 Sylvan Scrying because I need to drop a land every turn. I know this sound ridiculous but trust me, when playing Cruel Control, you need a land drop every turn.

I might try building a more aggressive build with more creatures and less control spells but we'll see. I like playing control and sometimes when you build a agro-control deck, it's spread too thin. It's better for this deck to be focused on either agro or control. But like I said, we'll see. I'm thinking about playing 4 Fullminator Mages and 2 Violent Ultimatum in the main deck. But like I said, we'll see. I'll probably play TNM @ the Source and FNM @ Outpost again. This Friday they're having a box tournament. $15 entry free but 1st gets a box of Shards and 2-4 split a box.

In my opinion, Kithkin is probably the best deck in the format. Faeries are really slow now and so is RDW. Faeries have tough matchups against really agro decks and with Stillmoon Cavalier. RDW has trouble against Story Circle, Arbiter of Knolridge, and Burrington Forge-Tender. 5-Color Control has a hard time with anything really agro and Reviellark. In the mirrormatch, it comes down to who can Mirroweave the best and that just takes practice and patience.

I'll probably put a post about how I did at TNM on Wednesday. I hope I do well @ FNM and win a box. Have a great rest of the weekend everybody!
