Tuesday Review: UnChristian – Chapter 5: Antihomosexual

Okay so here’s a big ticket item: HOMOSEXUALITY

So why do you think those who are living a homosexual lifestyle dislike the church and Christians so much? Is it because they think that all Christians are evil? Is it because they think that the Bible is all wrong? Well…

Many people in the gay community don’t seem to have issues with Jesus but rather with those claiming to represent him today. It’s very much an “us-versus-them” mentality, as if a war has been declared. Of course each side thinks the other fired the opening shot. Peter, 34 (91).

There’s partial truth that some Christians don’t like homosexuality. Here are some quotes from the book that supports that statement.

Born-again Christians are more likely to disapprove of homosexuality than divorce (94). [Absolutely MIND-BLOWING!]

In another study we discovered that two out of every five born-again Christians, including the same proportion of evangelicals, admitted they have more sympathy for people who have cancer than they do for people with HIV/AIDS. In probing people’s attitudes, we find this perspective typically springs from the idea that the disease is deserved. They believe God is punishing these people—or that their decisions and lifestyle deserve this outcome (95). [So then what about all of those heterosexuals in Africa?]

Do we really want government regulating the sex lives of its adult citizens? Our concerns about preventing the advancement of homosexual rights often translate into a desire for unrealistic boundaries on people’s lives (97).

We cannot assume that politics is the only or best way to influence people… You change a country not merely by bolstering its laws but by transforming the hearts of its people (106).

I think the issue isn’t a homosexuality issue, I think it’s a sexual issue.

Every one of us, gay or straight or whatever, expresses sexuality in broken ways (108).”

Homosexuality is just one face of a sexually broken society.
- rev. Alfred Ells (executor director, Leaders that Last Ministries)

“There is not a special judgment for homosexuals, and there is not a special righteousness for heterosexuals (95-6).”
- Shane Wheeler

I think as Christians we need to admit that there is something perversely wrong with our perceptions on sexuality. It’s so skewed that we think we know all the answers and that we will bash people who are gay, when we look at our addiction to pornography and view it as “not as bad.”

Simply put, Christians think there is a problem but have no idea what to do about it (101).

How about we start with prayer?

Only 1 percent of Americans say they pray for homosexuals; a similarly miniscule proportion say they address the issue by donating money to organizations that help people dealing with the lifestyle or that they try to have meaningful discussions with people about it (101).

If Christians really do care about homosexuality, then why don’t 100% of all Americans pray for homosexuals? Our current methods of trying to regulate sexuality through the government and trying to inflict so much isolation and pain on these people will never make them want to be a Christian. I know for a fact that Jesus would love these people into change, not use scare-tactics or abuse them.

i totally agree hun! people want the law to dictate people's actions and hearts, but people don't want to make the effort to transform LIVES.
