Thoughts About M:TG World 2009

Okay so I've finally finished watching all of the M:TG World videos and have read most of the articles. Here are some of my observations:

Malin won the finals because he was able to Thoughtsieze Parke's hand like a pro, Sower of Temptation Parke's Rhox War Monk multiple times, and Spellstutter Sprite at just the right moments. I think because of the those three cards he was able to win Worlds.

No W/B Tokens or W/R Ajani V decks made it to the top 8 because the mana curve in those decks is too steep. If you want a turn 2 Bitterblossum then that means that you'll have to settle for a turn 4 Spectral Procession. Do you want a turn 2 Knight of Meadowgrain or a turn 3 Flame Javelin to get rid of your opponent's creature?

In 5-Color Control decks, if you're playing with 26 lands, then at least 14 CAN'T come into play tapped. That should be your rule of thumb.

Luis Scott-Vargas' Extended Swans deck looks like so much fun to play! It uses Swans of Bryn Argoll and Chain of Plasma to draw infinite cards for the win.

Luis Scott-Varga, who has been on a tear as of late, was asked how he's become so successful lately. He replied "I'm just playing good decks now." If you ever want to get better, then you're going to have to play good decks.

Blong and I were talking Monday night, while we were watching the Bears game and playing Magic, that you can't get attached to certain cards or styles of Magic because it's not going to make you a better player. In fact, it will limit you.

What if in the near future Cruel Ultimatum is no longer a good card? What if for the next 2 years I continually try to make a good deck with it? You see, you can't emotionally attach your self to a certain card because it's not making you a better player.

Before this year, I've never been much of an aggro or control player. I think I've always been mid-tempo'ish. But this year I love control and it's made me a better player. Because of Peter, I've also been playing a lot of aggro decks like Kithkin. And guess what! I love it and it's made me a better player.

You can't fall in love with a certain card, style, or color because it's not going to make you a better player. In fact, right after Blong said that to me, he gave me back my 3 Chamelion ColossI and 2 Cloudthreshers. He said "I fell in love with those cards and I realized they're not making me a better player." He's tried hard to make a beatdown deck with those Colossi only to realize that they've limited him in his growth.

Anybody want to trade? I've got 3 Chamelion Colossi and 4 Fullminator Mages. I'm looking for 3 Ajani Vengeants & 4 Jace Beleran.

I wonder what Nicol Bolas' abilities are going to be?
