Friday Night Magic -103009- @ Outpost 2000 in Coon Rapids, MN

My Jund Deck:
4 Bloodbraid Elf /// 4 Putrid Leech /// 4 Sprouting Thrinax /// 3 Great Sable Stag /// 2 Broodmate Dragon /// 1 Thornling

Thornling is great because it’s Indestructible; the only thing is that it’s a 7 drop, not a 6 drop like Broodmate because you need 1 mana to make it Indestrucible on your turn, as well as another on your opponents turn. Sable Stag was solid for me but I may only keep Sable Stag main for another week or two at most because there are less and less Vampire/Jund decks out there.

2 Garruk Wildspeaker

4 Blightning /// 4 Lightning Bolt /// 4 Maelstrom Pulse /// 3 Bituminous Blast

I’m playing with 4 Pulses and no Terminates because I had a feeling that I was going to see more Planeswalkers, so I wanted to have a way to get rid of any permenant.

4 Verdant Catacombs /// 4 Savage Lands /// 3 Dragonskull Summit /// 3 Rootbound Crag /// 4 Forest /// 3 Mountain /// 3 Swamp /// 1 Oran-Rief, the Vastwood

Sideboard:
3 Vampire Nighthawk /// 3 Jund Charm /// 2 Pyroclasm /// 3 Duress /// 2 Thought Hemorrhage /// 2 Slave of Bolas

Nighthawk is nice but there’s so much removal that it’s getting harder and harder for it to stay alive.

About 17 people showed up and we only played 3 rounds

Round 1 vs. Ryan’s Naya Zoo Deck

Game 1: He mulls down to 6 and I hit him with a turn 3 Blightning. He gets stuck on 4 lands while my deck curves out after turn 3 and he can’t recover.

Game 2: He gets stuck on 3 lands after a mulligan. Ryan is able to hold me back because I kept a creature-less hand with 2 Paths and a Naya Charm. Eventually he has a full grip with only 3 lands in play. My Broodmate Dragon and her mate brings him all the way down from 18 to 5 life. With only 5 life left, he finds his 4th land but it’s a fetch land and reveals that he has 3 Bloodbraid Elves in his hand and scoops up.

Round 1 result: 2-0
Game results: 2-0
Match results: 1-0

Round 2 vs. Will’s Jund Deck (I’ve never played against Will but always see him doing well and his binder is stocked full of great cards but his deck was awkwardly built because he didn’t maindeck any Putrid Leeches.)

Game 1: I keep an awkward hand of 5 lands, Bituminous Blast, and Sprouting Thrinax. I drop the Thrinax on turn 3, but luckily for me he doesn’t drop anything till turn 4; a Bloodbraid into a Pulse, which destroys my Thrinax. He keeps his Bloodbraid back and passes the turn to me. I Bit Blast his Bloodbraid and cascade into a Putrid Leech, which he immediately Bolts. That play kind of caught me off guard and a couple of seconds later I respond by pumping it, even though he had BR up still. If he was willing to Bolt and Terminate my pumped Leech, I would be more than willing to make that trade. But alas, he doesn’t have another removal spell in his hand. After everything resolves and I swing with my 3 Saproling tokens. Eventually I lay down a Thornling with 1 green mana up. On Will’s turn, he tries to Pulse it and I make it Indestructible, which totally catches him off guard. Thornling goes all the way twice by becoming a 7/1 indestructible trampler.

Game 2: He mulls down to 6 on the play. I play a turn 3 Blightning which makes him squirm. I keep on hitting my land drops and eventually again Thornling becomes a 7/1 Indestructible trampler twice for the win.

Round 2 result: 2-0
Game results: 4-0
Match results: 2-0

We talked for a while afterwards about why he Bolted my Putrid Leech so quickly and he simply said that he wasn’t expecting me to pump my Leech in response. He also asked me how many Thornling I play and told him only 1; he was somewhat upset that I was able to play my 1 Thornling with green mana up in both games. We exchanged decks and sideboards and I saw that he didn’t main his Leeches because he said that he just started to play Jund and didn’t know how to play Leeches so we talked about that for a while as well. I told him that if your opponent has mana up for their removal spells, then don’t pump, just let it do 2 damage because if you pump it, they’ll kill it and you’ll lose your Leech and 2 life as well.

Match 3 vs. Elliot’s Agro Vampire deck

We made a deal that I would get all of his product in exchange for the win. The winner gets free admission ($25) into tomorrow Twin Cities Game Fest.

Game 1: He plays a turn 1 Lacerator and then a turn 2 Bloodchief Ascension. Eventually he plays a turn 4 Vampire Nocturnus and then on turn 5 plays Sign in Blood on me bringing me down to 2 life and activating his Ascension.

Game 2:
He plays another turn 1 Lacerator and a turn 3 Bloochief Ascension. Again on turn 4 he plays Vampire Nocturnus and then another Nocturnus on turn 5. I eventually die on turn 6.

If I were to play a Vampire deck, I would play something like what Elliot played. A real aggressive build with Lacerators, Guul Draz, Hexmage, Nighthawk, 2 Diabolic Tutors to get me my Nocturnus more consistently.

Round 1 result: 0-2
Game results: 4-2
Match results: 2-1

I end up getting third, which is only 2 packs but I also get Elliot’s 5 packs as well. I decided that I just didn’t have enough time available on Saturday to play 5+ rounds of magic, so I decided to give Elliot the guaranteed win and free entrance to the Twin Cities Game Fest.
