SCR Draft & Joe Wong

I was supposed to get off at 12:30 today but 2 of my superiors are gone on vacation and the other superior’s back is acting up and is leaving early. I guess I’ll be here to 4 or 5’ish. Oh well. I also have to finish up a midterm by midnight tonight. I guess no Happy Hour with co-workers for me today.

I also just took my first two Wizards DCI “Rules Advisor” Practice Tests and got 50% on both! Haha! That’s hilarious! It’s tough because I’ve only been back into magic for the last 9 months and they’re questions contain some old cards. Plus they ask me floor rule questions as well, like if a player does this, what are his consequences. Oh well, they’re fun when you have 30 minutes to kill.

I have about 19 boosters left in my M:TGO account, all of which are Alara Reborn. I don’t really care to draft Shards that much anymore, but I am really anxious to draft M10 though. But for the few past drafts I’ve done some crazy drafting, I’ve gone 3-0, 2-1, 3-0, & 2-1. Here’s how I do it.

Pack 1 (Shards of Alara): I go for bomb rares that will turn the game around or for removal like Oblivion Ring, Agony Warp, Branching Bolt, Scourglass, Infest, Caldera Hellion, etc. If neither of those options are available then I go for Tri-Lands, Panoramas, or Obelisks. Usually after the first pack I have close to about 6 lands/Obelisks, which totally opens up my mana base to play 5C with a 2C focus. I’ll usually start to focus in on 2 colors as well by now. I usually go r/b or g/w or g/r or w/u. r/b is so deep in Alara Reborn.

Pack 2 (Conflux): The three main cards that I look for are Suicidal Charge, Armillary Sphere, and Vagrant Plow Beast. Yes, Vagrant Plow Beast, a 6/6 that regenerates anything with a power of 5 or greater. This guy is a beast!

Pack 3 (Alara Reborn): This is where I start to grab my main creatures. I don’t really grabe “blades” all that much because my deck is slower. Plus I'd rather Armillary Sphere on turn 2 then play a "blade." I try to find creatures that are good against blades like that 4/4 guy that cycles. If I’m b/r, that’s great because there are so many good aggressive b/r creatures in Alara Reborn.

I think I’ve drafted this archetype so much that I know what cards to look for and what to avoid. Plus, if you’re constantly taking away the non-basic lands in the first pack, you’re only making your opponents mana trickier. There have been drafts where I end up with 8-10 non-basic lands/Obelisks from the 1st pack. But alas, M10 is before us and I must relearn how to draft this new format.

I think this guy is hilarious!

i dont know what it is but we are just killing in draft these days lol. i would have won last week if it wasn't for being a bad shuffler. i swear, i haven't drafted bad in my last 5-6 FNM's. I've gone... lemme really check. 3-0, 2-0-1 (tied you), 2-0-1, 2-1, 2-1, 2-1 LOL.

i wish this block could last forever hehe.... it's actually very advanced to draft these sets together, and we do well against lesser advanced players who show up at FNM.

and my worst showing has been 6th place, i'm always in the top half when it comes to drafting...

now standard? thats what's killing me. my total score was 1560 before i started taking this whole thing seriously. getting back to 1600 was a chore in itself hehe...
