I got a chance to chat with Justin about his gear this past Sunday and I was quite impressed! He's a super nice, down-to-earth guy.Justin's a pro (Stefan Van Voorst, Superchick, The Swift, and Wyclef Jean) here's a video of his board:
I was really impressed by his gear and his knowledge of it all. But the one thing that most impressed me about our chat was this; he said something along the lines of "That no matter what gear you use, you ultimately will sound like you."
It's so true. Yes, the more expensive gear you have, the better you might sound. But ultimately, it's you that determines what you sound like. Give Jack White a cheap guitar and amp from Target and guess what, he's going to sound like Jack White! He's going to sound amazing!
Gear does matter, but it's not as important as who you are and how you develop your own unique sound. People like your music and personality not because of the clothes you wear or the gear that you use, but by things that you cannot buy, the intangible things that you have to develop from within yourself.
Check out Stefan's new album:
It's got some sweet tunes & tones on it. The bass fills the bottom end but doesn't make the mix sound muddy or too heavy. The drums sound natural and you can almost feel the air moving around the drummer. The guitars are pristine. The songs are great and really reflect what's been on Stefan's heart. There are also some pretty sweet slides and crazy fuzz sounds on the album. As a guitarist, what else could you ask for? Songs with heart, some guitar & lap steel slides, and fuzz! Justin said that there's a lot of the ZVex Fuzz Factory on this album, check it out!
