The Klon Centaur is by far the definitive boutique guitar pedal. I’ve never played one and doubt that I’ll ever see one in real life. They stopped making it last year. Supposedly, sometime later this year, he's allowing someone to build this pedal, but as of so far, the guitar community has heard nothing. When they were available, the average wait time for one of these bad boys ranged from a couple of months to a year. According to his site he’s built close to about 5,000 of these by hand and sold them for about $300 each, that’s $1.5 million in revenue! Not too bad!!! Rumor has it that he has enough orders in to keep himself busy for another 5 years. If you really want one, you can find them on eBay for $500 - $600.
A few years back, I really wanted to try to make my own Klon Centaur but guess what… most of the Klons looked like this inside… Yeps! That’s epoxy! He’s covered his board with epoxy so that you’ll have a harder time ripping off his design.
But guess what! A little persistence pays off! In fact, photos and schematics can be found all over the internet now!
There are even kits now available to make Klon clones! Most guitarist just want good tone and quickly. Most don't want to waste time building a pedal when they can just buy it, so the Klon will always be in demand.I’m just dreaming here but I think it would be awesome to design a guitar pedal that so many people would want that I could do it full-time. I honestlywould leave my current job to build a guitar pedal fulltime. I would be my own accountant though because I still do enjoy accounting so much.
