I’m getting into guitar gear again. I should be getting some guitar pedal parts in soon and I can’t wait! I’m going through a book at the moment (pictured above) about how to build clones of popular pedals, as well as your own.So there’s usually a process that guitar pedal builders go through:
1. They mod premade pedals like Boss DS-1s or Ibanez TS9s.
2. They start to build clones of popular pedals from pre-assembled kits or instructions from the internet.
3. They start to design and build their own pedals.
I’m starting to transition into phase 2, I just bought a breadboard (pictured above) and as soon as my parts come in; I'm going to start building. My goal is to build a Tube Screamer and Fulldrive clone as well as boost pedal. Here’s a list of some guitar pedals that I’ve modified so far:
1. Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive w/ Indy Guitarist (IG) “MOSFET” Mod
2. Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive w/ Indy Guitarist (IG) “Fulltone” Mod
3. Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion w/ Indy Guitarist (IG) Marshall & Keeley Seeing Eye Mod
4. Boss DS-1 Distortion w/ Indy Guitarst (IG) Boost Mod
5. Boss DS-1 Distorion w/ PedalDoc Solo Booster Mod
6. Boss OD-3 Overdrive w/ Monte Allum’s Supra Mod
7. Boss BD-2 Blue Driver w/ Monte Allum’s H20 Mod
8. Ibanez TS7 Tube Screamer w/ Monte Allum’s Standard Mod
9. DOD FX60 Chorus w/ IG Standard Mod
10. Boss CS-3 Compression Sustain w/ IG Fat Body Mod
11. Boss TR-2 Tremolo w/ IG Standard Mod
12. Ibanez TS5 Tube Screamer w/ IG Standard Mod
13. Ibanez TS5 Tube Screamer w/ IG Brent Mason Mod
14. Ibanez TS5 Tube Screamer w/ IG 316 Mod
15. Ibanez TS9 w/ IG Standard Mod
16. Ibanez TS9DX Turbo Tube Screamer w/ IG BSM & 316 Mod
Here are some pedals that I’ve destroyed while trying to mod:
1. Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion
2. Rocktron Sonic Glory
I know that I’ve done more pedal mods but I can’t remember them all. Most of these pedals I’ve either sold or given away. I think right now I have about 6 laying around. I still might mod some pedals in the future but we’ll see. I also want to start modifying guitar amps too, but those are dangerous to mod because of the amount of electricity running through them (they can kill you). But like I said, I want to push myself to the next level and start building pedals.
Here are some pictures of some crazy guitar pedals out there:
This is a picture of a Triple RAT! It's 3 ProCo RATs in one pedal! Total craziness!
This pedal is probably one the greatest ideas ever! It's a Tube Screamer clone with a Fuzz pedal with a clean boost at the end! This is glorious! I want to try to build something similar, perhaps something with a Tube Screamer clone that has a FullDrive option, then a Blues Driver/RAT clone, with a clean boost at the end.Stay tuned for more updates on my quest to find my tone!
