Vern, Chong, and Vipat have been playing Ante Decks for a while now. Here's the jist of it, you and your opponent play a Standard match, the loser LOSES HIS DECK!!!
I'm still playing around with the ground rules for this format but here's what I have so far:
- Decks have to be Standard (minimum of 60 cards) with a sideboard (maximum of 15 cards). (Should we allow sideboards? How about a 10 card sideboard?)
- Best out of 5 games, no time limit. So that a true, honest winner can be determined. (Should we go up to best out of 7 games? We are gambling with decks that have costed us a decent chunk of change as well as a few hours of building and playtesting?)
- All cards must be sleeved (no penny sleeves) and come in a deck box. The loser loses all sleeves and the deck box. (I like this rule, sometimes you're more focused on keeping/wining your sleeves and deck box than your cards.)
- Once you win a deck, you can do what ever you want with it. You don't have to keep it as is. You can disassemble it, burn it, tweek it, you can do what ever you want with it. It's yours now.
- Are these rules too structured? Are these rules taking the fun out of this format? Does it need to be more casual like no sideboards allowed and best out of 3 games?
It's been fun trying to build Ante Decks because you don't want to put bomb cards in your deck because you might lose them. But at the same time you want good cards in there so that you can win other decks. What do you guys think? After the SCG $5K this weekend I'm going to be focusing on my Ante Decks. Any comments or additional rules will be greatly appreaciated!

I originally consulted Vern about a sideboard and he said "no." I'm ok either way. I like the best of 5 match idea, perhaps we could do best of 7. I'm cool with the sleeves thing, but not the deck box. See what Vern and Chong think.
wow, super scary.
josh out.
