FNM Report -061209-

I finally caught up with all of the Pro Tour Honolulu stuff. I’ve been trying to up my Limited game because as-of-late I’ve been doing horrible. I’ve realized that I can usually draft a decent deck if I commit early. This approach bothers me because in a vacuum it works, but in most situations, you need to be paying attention to what cards you pass, what cards you’re passed, and what your drafting. I really need to ENGAGE into the draft when I’m drafting. Also, I need to pay more attention when I’m playing. Watching the PT: Honolulu stuff made me realize these things.

Friday night, Vern and I went to FNM. Chong and Peter showed up as well but were too late because the Source has only 16 slots due to a lack of space. I drafted a decent Bant deck with lots of mana ramp cards like Drumhunter, Sunseed Nurturer, and Obelisks. I had 2 Esper Chromarants, 2 of those W/U 1/3 Exalted guys from Alara Reborn, and my two bombs were Inkwell Leviathan and Imperial Archangel. I ended up losing to Sarah’s Naya deck in the final match. She had a good deck with 2 Vithian Stingers, 2 Stun Snipers, Bull Ceredon, etc. I won a game because I was able to get out my Shroud creatures. I ended up getting 2nd in my pod and winning an FNM Slave of Bolas and 1 PACK OF ALARA REBORN! What a rip-off! 1 PACK! 2nd, Grace, Blong, and Samsona also showed up but only to shop and wish us luck.

I totally forgot but a couple of weeks ago Legion Events was holding a $500 Booster Draft Tournament in Burnsville! Dang it! It was $35 to play, but you were guaranteed 2 booster drafts. Darn it, I could of won $250!

Also on July 18th, Legion Events will be holding a Standard $1K tournament in Madison, WI! I might try to make it… we’ll see… I think some of the MN & IL guys should try to show up for this tournament!

The FNM draft ended around 10:30 but I stayed till about midnight trading and just talking to people. I traded 2 signed Ajani Goldmanes for 2 regular Ajani Goldmanes and some filter lands. Then I traded 2 Ajani Goldmanes away for 2 Elspeths! Then I traded my Elspeths away for a bunch of cards that I needed. I also traded away my Garruks, I expect them to drop in price because they’re going to make that Garruk vs. Lilliana Duel Deck. By the end of the night I had acquired 3 Wraths of God, including an Unlimited Wrath, 2 Derranged Hermits, 3 Meddling Mage, and a bunch of other goodies. By far, my best trade of the night was when I traded away my FNM Slave of Bolas for 2 Vizzerdrixes! YES! VIZZERDRIX!

I also got to know two of the older regulars as well. Tom, he’s an older guy that drive 45 minutes to play Magic and Bruce, probably in his 60s, he just moved up MN because his wife passed away a year ago. He lives with his younger sister and doesn’t really know too many people up here. We chatted, traded cards, and played a few multi-player games. It was cool to get to know them.

Can’t wait for Josh and MK to get here, us guys are planning to take Josh out to a tournament everynight! Xay, if you’re on vacation, you should try to come up as well! Vipat!
